Propaganda maps

This is an example of cartographic propaganda. This particular map is based around the Cold War. Propaganda maps can be a way to show the power of countries and the area they have control over. These are usually political and many were used during the time of the Nazis in the Soviet Union.http://limpingmessenger.wordpress.com/2009/11/09/songs-and-samizdat-made-the-wall-fall-europe-against-the-current-september-1989-revisited/

Infrared aerial photo

This is a picture of an infrared aerial photograph and it is taken of the Sacramento deep water channel. The color in the aerial photos usually represent the different land types and vegetation. The red is live vegetation and the blue grey is what kind of ground it is on and the moisture content. It can also be useful for analyzing water depth. This is also a part of the USGS.http://www.aerialarchives.com/infraredcolors.htm

Black and white aerial photo

This photo is used is a picture of L.A and is a black and white aerial photos also known as remote sensing and they are a type of photos that are taken from the air or a satellite image that shows the landform, its resource, and vegetation. The US Geological survey began using these. These infrared aerial photos can be colored or like the one above which is black and white and taken at high or low altitutes.  http://www.lensculture.com/webloglc/mt_files/archives/2008/05/-from-the-series-oblivion.html

Dopplar radar

This dopplar radar map has a color scheme that makes it easy to visualize what the weather is like in the area shown. In this map there is more green, blue, and yellow and hardly any pink. There is a lot of rain. In some areas its light where as other areas its heavier. This map doesnt have any pink in it which means that there isnt any freezing going on. I think this is a good dopplar radar map because the color scheme helps me understand what the weather is like in other areas. http://backyard.weatherbug.com/profiles/blogs/choosing-the-best-doppler

Flow maps

Unlike dot distribution maps flow maps are clear and not cluttered. Cartographers use these to represent and display data such as the movement of an object from one area to another. A flow chart could be used when ahttp://graphics.stanford.edu/papers/flow_map_layout/naylzing data such as where the birds migrate to during the northern months due to climate change.

Mental Map

This is a mental map. I chose this one to be my example because when I think of mental maps I think of my third grade class when my friends and I would draw our treasure maps. Mental maps are a persons own perception of how they view the world. http://designrevival24.wordpress.com/2011/06/25/understanding-place-mental-mapping/

Dot distribution map

This dot distrubution map is representing the hispanic population in the Los Angelos. These kind of maps are uses a dot to symbol a trend in a certain area. They rely on visual scatter to show spatial pattern. Another way a dot distribution map could be useful for would be displaying the outbreak of a virus or sickness in a particular area.http://krygier.owu.edu/krygier_html/geog_353/geog_353_lo/geog_353_lo08.html
